Middle Education: History & Social Sciences Emphasis (Grades 6-8), B.S.

The Ferrum College Teacher Education Program prepares caring and competent pre-professionals as decision-makers for the diverse contexts of 21st-century classrooms, schools and communities. Building upon a solid liberal arts foundation, the Bachelor of Science in Middle Education program assists candidates to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to become effective and caring teachers in grades 6-8.  This major requires a minimum cumulative 2.8 GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in education courses.

Any student wishing to prepare for a career teaching middle grades 6-8 may do so by selecting the Middle Education program with an emphasis in one of the following areas: 

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • English
  • History and Social Sciences

The Experiential Component (requirement of the major) will be met by successfully completing the following:  

EDU 404 - Student Teaching and Synthesis Experience   (12)

History and Social Studies Emphasis


Required Liberal Arts Core (12 Credits)


History and Social Studies Emphasis Area Requirements (15 Credits)


Total Hours in History and Social Studies Emphasis: 69
