EDU 314 - The Teaching of EnglishCredit Hour(s): 3 This course provides the study of strategies, techniques, materials, technology, and current research used in the teaching of English to secondary (6-12) learners. Participants will employ the Virginia Standards of Learning to teach English at the middle and secondary school level using the latest theories and practices governing the teaching of written composition and research. Through hands-on learning activities, students will develop an awareness of the professional resources and technology available to teachers in order to teach reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, media literacy, and research. A wide variety of nonfiction, minority, ethnic, and young adult texts will be examined. In-class instruction is augmented by a required 20 hour internship experience in a middle or secondary school classroom. This course has an additional fee. 3 credits. 20 Service Hours.
